Made from real support work

I built Klackey because
my workflow got blocked.

I’m a Senior Principal Oracle Support Engineer. Klackey started as a way to keep doing my job after a tool I relied on every day stopped working, and it grew from there.

The old workflow

Firefox Clippings,
every day, for years.

Answering customer support cases all day means writing a lot of the same things, over and over: formatted replies, troubleshooting steps, links to the same resources. I used the Firefox Clippings extension to store and reuse all of it, running on our old support system.

The breaking point

We migrated systems.
Clippings got blocked.

When we moved to a new support system, Firefox Clippings was blocked, believed at the time to be over browser performance. My entire library of reusable replies was suddenly unreachable.

Looking for a replacement

Nothing else
actually fit.

I tried piecing together a replacement out of existing tools. What I found was always missing something: limited freeware that dropped features I needed, tools that required an ongoing subscription for something that used to be free, or products with real privacy concerns about where my clippings and customer information would end up.

Building Klackey

One app, doing it
better than the pieces ever did.

Instead of stitching together a clipboard tool, a snippet manager, and a text expander, I built Klackey to do all of it in one private, local app, with rich formatting, no subscription, and nothing sent off my computer.

Why Secure Folder exists

Two reasons I kept
running into the same problem.

The first was watching it happen to other people: on nearly every customer call I’ve sat in on, at some point the customer opens a spreadsheet to find a password and, for a moment, every password in it is visible on the shared screen.

The second was my own problem. I have far too many passwords to remember. I wanted a secure text expander: something that would type a password into a field for me, on demand, without ever asking me to memorize or look it up. That became Klackey’s Secure Folder.

The name

Clack. And key.

The name follows the same idea as the app: the familiar clack of a keyboard, and the key at the center of your workflow. Real typing, useful shortcuts, and the tools you reach for all day.

14 days. Every feature.

to solve my own problem.
